The Dutch club want are said to want the defender but think Liverpool’s €20M asking price is too high.
Liverpool are believed to be determined to give 22-year-old Dutch centre half Sepp van den Berg a chance to impress new manager Arne Slot in pre-season and before the club’s more established stars return following their summer international commitments.
Still, when the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez return the consensus is that it will be hard for Van den Berg to stick in a mix including rising star Jarell Quansah, and the assumption is that he will depart the club by the end of the transfer window.
So far, its Mainz—where he spent a successful 2023-24 on loan—who have been reported as favourites, but reports from the Netherlands this week claim Eredivisie side PSV are highly interested, though Liverpool’s claimed €20M asking price could be beyond them.
A fee in the €16-17M range is said to be as high as PSV can go for the speedy, ball-playing centre half, and given the spending power of clubs like Mainz or PSV it perhaps isn’t entirely unreasonable to think Liverpool may have to come down a little bit to sell.
Of course, it’s also entirely possible that if the club’s asking price isn’t met there will simply be another season on loan coming for Van den Berg, with the Reds having a history of not being especially flexible when it comes to selling off any of their spare parts.
