Add-ons could raise the offer as high as €15M but the Reds are said to be holding firm on their €20M valuation.
With established senior centre halves Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez away on holiday following their exertions at the Euros, Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot have been keen to give 22-year-old Sepp van den Berg a chance to impress.
He’s done so, but the consensus remains that he would be behind the returning trio and homegrown breakout star Jarell Quansah, and the player has talked of being eager to move on should a clear path to regular playing time not exist at Anfield this season.
There has been a widespread belief, then, that a transfer is a matter of when more than if, with Mainz in Germany—where Van den Berg spent last season on loan—and PSV in the Netherlands regularly discussed up as his most likely destinations.
Now, we have reports out of Netherlands of a firm bid having been made, €10M up front with add-ons that could take the final fee as high as €15M. Liverpool, though, are said to have rejected the bid instantly and are sticking to their €20M valuation.
It’s a fee that is said to be too high for PSV to meet, though the Dutch club might have at least a little wiggle room to increase the add-ons. Whether that would be enough to get the Reds to sell is an open question, as is where the player sees his future.
Barring a shock rise up the depth chart over the next week or two, that future likely is away from Anfield, but with Mainz interest—and potentially interest from elsewhere in Germany as well—it’s possible the Dutch league might not be his first choice.
