The claims in Spain have Liverpool’s deal to sign Martín Zubimendi progressing with the potential for a player to head in the other direction.

Despite something of a lull in news on the Martín Zubimendi front over the past 24 hours, Liverpool are continuing to make progress towards signing the 25-year-old Spain and Real Sociedad defensive midfielder.

That’s the latest transfer chatter out of Spain from Relevo and reporter Jorge Picon, who have previously been first to news that was subsequently confirmed from the Liverpool end and are now reiterating that Zubimendi wants the move.

It’s a comforting update for Liverpool fans nervous by the delay and reports Sociedad were doing their best to convince the player to stay, but the real news is the possibility the Reds could send a player in the other direction.

Zubimendi has a €60M release clause that would have to be paid up front, and previous reports have Liverpool willing to pay it if necessary, but the club would prefer to negotiate his transfer with the Basque club.

To that end, including a player for a club that have already seen significant departures in centre half Robin Le Normand and expect to lose midfielder Mikel Merino to Arsenal could be more than just an effort by the Reds to save money.

It’s not clear who may have been offered, but Liverpool have players like Fabio Carvalho, Wataru Endo, and Sepp van den Berg who have either been offered a move or signalled they would favour one that could fit the bill.
