The 25-year-old winger has been linked with a Liverpool move but it’s hard to see where he fits without outgoings.
A full month after the close of the 2023-24 season, Liverpool are yet to dip their toe in the summer transfer market. More than that, few on the outside of the club seem to have very much of an idea what moves might be in the works.
A few arrivals seem certain, but following last summer’s midfield rebuild there aren’t many pressing needs in the squad there has been little from reliable sources to give much of an idea of where Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will be looking to strengthen for new manager Arne Slot.
That means relying on sources from elsewhere whose information could speak to a selling club looking to drum up business or a player seeking improved terms as easily as it could legitimate Liverpool interest.
On that front, today we have a new name to add to the list: Crystal Palace’s 25-year-old English international winger Eberechi Eze. Currently on duty with England at the Euros though yet to make an appearance, Palace outlets are this claiming Liverpool have made contact over the player.
Tottenham and Manchester City are also said to be interested, though with fellow Palace winger Michael Olise looking set to join Bayern it would be at least somewhat surprising to see the London club eager to sell Eze as well.
Eze got his start early in Arsenal’s youth system before moving to Fulham, Reading, and Millwall as he rose through the ranks. His breakthrough eventually came at QPR as an 18-year-old. He’s been a regular starter for Palace for four seasons, making 124 appearances and scoring 26 goals.
By almost any metric—goals and assists or underlying—Eze seems a step down from current Liverpool left winger Luis Diaz, but if the interest is real it’s possible the numbers suggest to the Reds’ recruiters a step up in teammate quality would see him step up.
For Liverpool’s interest in Eze to be legitimate, though, it would almost certainly have to mean a departure for Diaz or potentially Diogo Jota in order to make room in the squad. Or it could turn out any chatter has more to do with Eze and Palace than Liverpool.
