Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Confident of Signing Marc Guéhi

The England international doesn’t make for an obvious target on paper but the rumour mongers insist the Reds are likely to get a deal done.

In the land of transfer rumours, there are broadly speaking three types of stories. Those based on leaks from a potential selling club, those based on leaks from those connected to a player, and then those from a buying club.

In the first case, the leaks are often intended to drive up interest or motivate a buyer to hurry up and meet the asking price. In the second it’s about angling for a move—or a new contract at the player’s current club. In the final case, leaks are often seen as unintentional and unwelcome.

At least when it’s not a case of lazy rumour mongers making things up out of whole cloth—or reviving stories from previous windows to pass the time and fill the content void—those tend to be the options for where a transfer story comes from.

Which brings us by roundabout way to Marc Guéhi, the 24-year-old Crystal Palace centre half and England international. He’s already been linked with the Reds a few times so far this summer, and while he is a solid player with upside those links have tended to raise a few eyebrows.

Now, though, Team Talk are claiming exclusive information on the Guéhi front. And that exclusive information is that Liverpool are highly confident of getting a deal done for the defender in short order with the Euros now concluded.

A mooted £65M fee for a player who’s said to have also attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham isn’t said to be a problem, either, though from the outside at least that seems an exceptionally steep price for a player few would consider one of Liverpool’s top two centre halves were he signed.

At 6’ (1.82m), Guéhi would also arrive as Liverpool’s shortest centre half, which would have been a red flag for the rumour given under Jürgen Klopp, but under new manager Arne Slot it’s possible recruitment criteria could change.

Regardless, we’re skeptical and think it’s safe to assume this isn’t the case of an unwanted leak from the Liverpool end. Which leaves the possibility of Palace finishing for interest or a player either looking for a move or an improved deal.

The latter seems likeliest to us, as either a move up the table or at the least an improved wage following a prominent role for England at the Euros feels very much like what a player of Guéhi’s age and profile would want.
