After successful loan spells for Tyler Morton and Fabio Carvalho, Hull City are making a surprise early push to take James McConnell on loan for 2024-25.
Normally, lower league teams look to get any permanent deals done early in the transfer window before rounding out the roster with any necessary loans as the window heads into its later stages.
For Hull City, though, after benefiting massively from loans for Tyler Morton and Fabio Carvalho last season, the Championship side is making a surprise early push to sign James McConnell on loan.
The 19-year-old Liverpool midfielder cracked the first team with the Reds last season, making 11 total appearances for the club as he filled in for more senior stars during an injury-hit winter.
After impressing in pre-season, he made the matchday squad in August, made his senior debut off the bench against Toulouse in October, and his first start came against Norwich in the FA Cup in January.
He was one of the youngsters who came off the bench in the League Cup final against Chelsea, helping to secure a 1-0 victory and final piece of silverware for departing manager Jürgen Klopp.
Conventional wisdom suggests Liverpool would hold off on a decision about McConnell’s future, but the success of Morton and Carvalho at Hull can’t be overlooked and a loan there could make sense.
