The Liverpool midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and is yet to play a minute of football in 2023-24.
A season-ending knee injury to star youngster Gavi has Barcelona scrambling for midfield options, with plans to dip into the transfer market in January, and one of the top names on their list of options is Liverpool’s Thiago.
Despite Thiago himself having yet to play a minute of football this season and with no clear timeline for his return, the Barca academy graduate who followed Pep Guardiola to Bayern Munich could be the target according to Sport.
For their part, with the player out of contract in the summer and depth seemingly sufficient in midfield in his absence and following a summer rebuild, Liverpool are said to be willing to do a deal if the player wants the move.
The Catalan outlet further claim that by the time the transfer window opens, Thiago will be fit and ready to go, which is a far firmer and more bullish statement than we’ve yet heard from anyone connected at the Liverpool end.
Still, assuming he actually is set to be fit and Barcelona actually have set their sights on him, it’s likely true that Liverpool wouldn’t stand in his way and would allow him to depart for a cut-rate fee if Thiago wanted to go home.
