TalkSport pundit Jason Cundy has branded Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as ‘overrated’ after his mistake against Fulham last night.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side had to come from behind to win the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final yesterday. That’s because of an error from Van Dijk, which was so unlike him.

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is regarded by many as the best centre-back in the world.
The Dutchman has been unbelievable for the Reds over the years. He is arguably the biggest reason why they’ve had so much success, and he’s still going strong.
Van Dijk started for Liverpool last night, and it wasn’t his best game. He made a very uncharacteristic error to allow Willian to open the scoring for Fulham in the first half.
Liverpool had to dig deep to get the win as a result, and speaking about Van Dijk’s performance after the game, Jason Cundy claimed that the Liverpool captain, who is almost always lauded, is actually a bit overrated.
Cundy said on TalkSPORT: “He can do this Van Dijk. Sometimes, he puts in displays where you go ‘that’s a bit rubbish!’
“Personally, I think he’s overrated. I don’t think that he’s anywhere near the levels consistently of the likes of Sol Campbell, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, I don’t think he’s anywhere near that level, personally. He’s had, what, two good seasons?
“I know people will go back to the injury he picked up against Everton, I think it was during Covid, it was a terrible injury. There’s no doubt that he’s top-class, but I don’t think if you put an all-time Premier League team together, he’s not in that team.”

The awful injury Virgil van Dijk suffered against Everton a few years ago has definitely had an impact, but he is still an incredible defender.
The £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) Dutchman’s record for Liverpool, especially at Anfield, is truly remarkable. They are so hard to beat when he starts at the back, and he rarely ever makes mistakes.
As for comparing Van Dijk with the greatest defenders the Premier League has ever seen, let’s wait until he retires. It’s always an unfair comparison when he’s still playing.
Once he does hang up his boots and people can look at his career as a whole, we’re sure he will be in the conversation when you’re talking about the best in history.
