Roy Keane shares his first thoughts on Arne Slot potentially joining Liverpool

Liverpool seem to be closing in on a new manager in the shape of Arne Slot.

The Dutchman is said to be keen to take over at Anfield, and according to one journalist, this one is a done deal.

This one has come from left-field, and there have been some seriously mixed reactions to this news.

On one hand, Slot has never managed at the very top level and he’s unproven for a club the stature of Liverpool, but, at the same time, he’s done a brilliant job in the Eredivisie and you can only judge someone on what they have done.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Roy Keane has been discussing the idea of Slot coming to Liverpool, and he says that he’s not at all enthused by this appointment.

Roy Keane not excited by Arne Slot

The Irishman spoke about Slot potentially joining Liverpool alongside Jamie Carragher.

“When it came out yesterday it was a bit,” Carragher started.

“It’s not exciting, is it?” Keane interrupted.

Arne Slot could be brilliant

Keane is right, this isn’t one that is easy to get excited about, but don’t write Slot off just yet.

Indeed, the Eredivisie has been the breeding ground for some incredible coaches over the years from Louis van Gaal to Guus Hiddink, and Slot may be the next off of that production line.

Of course, for every Van Gaal there’s a Steve McClaren or a Frank de Boer, and Liverpool need to be careful that they’re not falling into that sort of trap.

The reality is that every great manager has to start somewhere, and while this isn’t the biggest or most exciting name, there’s no reason why Slot can’t be a success at Anfield.

It may not be the most headline-grabbing appointment of all-time, but there’s still some reason to be excited about the idea of Slot heading to Anfield.
