Rio Ferdinand says Liverpool have a 24-year-old in their ranks who he'd have hated to play against

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is back on the goal trail and earning plaudits from peers and pundits.

One of the latest to praise the Reds ace is Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who suggested he’d have disliked playing against him.

Nunez took a while to get up to speed at Liverpool following his big-money move from Benfica back in the summer of 2022.

However, the 24-year-old Reds ace has established himself as a serious threat for opposition defences, and is clocking up some good stats.

This season, Nunez has registered 12 goals and 11 assists from 36 Liverpool outings in all competitions.

The Uruguay international played a big part in helping the Reds return to the top of the Premier League table at the weekend.

Nunez scored his side’s third goal against Burnley at Anfield on Saturday to put the game out of the visitors’ reach.

In the 79th minute of the match, the Liverpool forward headed home from a Harvey Elliott cross after the visitors failed to clear their lines.

Rio Ferdinand says Liverpool ace Darwin Nunez would be ‘hard work’ to play against

Ferdinand and Vibe with FIVE co-host Joel Beya spoke about Nunez on the latest episode of the show.

“Darwin,” said Ferdinand, when Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Burnley was brought up. “Darwin’s scoring again.”

Beya then claimed: “But he’s so up and down man.” To which Ferdinand replied: “It would be hard work to play against him, whatever you say.”

When one of the greatest defenders in Premier League history admits it would be hard work to play against Nunez, that’s a real badge of honour for the Liverpool man.

Sure, he may not be a consistent, clinical goal machine. But what he brings to the game is certainly working wonders in terms of Liverpool’s trophy chances this season.

Nunez’s finishing can be a bit hit and miss, but he does get goal contributions, causes havoc among the opposition defence, and is the very definition of a ‘thorn in the side’ of the opposition.

At 24 years of age, he’s yet to reach his prime as a forward. If he does add clinical finishing to his repertoire, then things will get really tasty.
