It takes a lot to become a top level manager.
Hard-work, dedication, knowledge and leadership ability all play a massive part, but, as with anything, sometimes you just need a bit of luck.
Indeed, managerial careers can be rollercoasters at the best of times, and these days, which job you take is almost just as important as how good of a job you do.
Some jobs are almost impossible for any manager – just look at Chelsea over the past 18 months, while some teams are geared for success.
One side that are seemingly perfect for any manager is Brighton, the Seagulls’ incredible recruitment philosophy combined with a feel-good factor at the Amex over the past two years makes the south coast club a perfect launching pad for any manager.
Roberto De Zerbi has built his reputation massively over the past 12 months at Brighton, and now, he’s being linked with a move to Liverpool.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Sam Allardyce has been discussing De Zerbi, and he noted just how much managerial moves can be down to luck, claiming that the Italian is in the right place at the right time when this opportunity has come up.

Allardyce shared his verdict on De Zerbi.
“Jurgen Klopp, I think whoever takes the job, Xabi Alonso has been strongly linked with it, but I don’t think he’s the answer. De Zerbi, you know your career can change, if you’re in the right place at the right time you can get a job, and De Zerbi is probably in the right place because his previous jobs he’s been sacked from, he’s not come with a huge reputation, but he’s building this huge reputation,” Allardyce said.
Spot on
Allardyce is right, timing can be everything when these big jobs come up.
If Jurgen Klopp was leaving Liverpool 18 months or two years ago, Steven Gerrard would be the massive favourite to takeover, but after being sacked by Aston Villa and moving to Saudi Arabia, Gerrard will be nowhere near getting this job this time around.
De Zerbi’s stock is on the rise at just the right moment, and that may well lead to a move to Anfield.
