The move will be until January.
Liverpool centre-back Rhys Williams has joined League Two side Morecambe on loan until January. The 23-year-old defender, who is a cult figure at the club for his efforts in the injury-plagued 20/21 season, has had previous loan spells at Kidderminster Harriers, Blackpool, Swansea City, and Aberdeen. The academy product has been at Liverpool’s academy since he was 10, and in that 20/21 season, he played in nine Premier League matches and six Champions League games under manager Jürgen Klopp.
Speaking about joining the Shrimps (!), Rhys had this to say:
“I’m delighted, the manager has given me a chance to come and play football here and that’s the main thing.”
“I want him to be able to trust me, I want to come in and impress the fans so hopefully we have a successful season.”
“I spoke to a few of the boys and they were all really complimentary about the club, the staff, and fans, so there was only one place I wanted to go.”
Talking about what he’ll bring to his new team, he said:
“I’m composed on the ball, I like to chip in with a few goals... and I’m a commanding presence at the back.”
Rhys hasn’t managed to catch on at his previous loan spells. At this point, he just really needs to play. Hopefully, he can make an impression on the staff at Morecambe and build a solid start to his life post-Liverpool.
