Tottenham are set to be busy in the transfer market come the summer, with Ange Postecoglou willing to place his faith in youth – and he could be about to raid Sunderland for another young star.
Dane Scarlett and Jamie Donley have both been given game time, while Ashley Phillips, Alfie Dorrington and more have been included in matchday squads. Postecoglou is more than willing to play youngsters.
Come the summer, it would be of no surprise if Tottenham make a few additions to the senior squad – but also the U21 side, with a view to improving the first team in the long-term. Chris Rigg can do that.
Those not of a Sunderland persuasion will remember a 15-year-old scoring for Sunderland in The FA Cup last season against Fulham. Now 16, he has gone on to play 17 times at senior level, scoring two.
A player that then-Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray loved – saying he is a “joy to watch” in training, and an “amazing” talent. Unsurprisingly, there is interest in Rigg, who already has three England U18 caps.

Rigg’s future – contract situation, and the club that suits him
Rigg is due to see his contract at Sunderland end in June 2025, with Sunderland unable to offer Rigg a long-term deal due to his age. It is unclear how much Sunderland would want for the midfield talent.
But, which club of the four interested suits him best? Liverpool hand out plenty of opportunities to youth, but with Jurgen Klopp going – can that be guaranteed? It depends on the club’s replacement.
Tottenham, as aforementioned, will hand out opportunities to youngsters but not to the level Liverpool do. City, even less so. Newcastle would allow him to remain at home – surely a no-brainer for Rigg.
