Report: Spurs among sides now most keen on midfielder Woodgate labelled 'outstanding'; but Liverpool also keen

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the teams most interested in signing Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough next summer, but Liverpool could look to rival them.

That is according to a report from the Daily Mail, which notes that a number of scouts from top-flight clubs have been to look at the 21-year-old this season.

Hayden Hackney has established himself as one of the most impressive central midfielders in the Championship. He has been a mainstay of the Boro side since making his debut in 2021.

Tottenham and Liverpool want Hayden Hackney

Middlesbrough hope to keep the youngster beyond the January transfer window. But the Daily Mail reports that they are resigned to losing Hackney in the summer should they fail to seal promotion.

Certainly, a number of Premier League teams are lurking; ready to offer him the chance to step up should Michael Carrick’s side miss out on going up this season.

The Daily Mail reports that Tottenham are one of the teams showing the most interest. Meanwhile, their sources suggest that Liverpool could be Spurs’ biggest rival for his signature.

Manchester City and Manchester United are also monitoring his development. And Nottingham Forest could apparently test Middlesbrough’s resolve to keep him in January.

Spurs need greater depth in midfield

Ange Postecoglou putting together Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr has proved to be a masterstroke this season. The pair have been exceptional.

However, depth is an issue for Tottenham. They will lose both Bissouma and Sarr to AFCON 2023 in the new year. And it does appear that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is not as naturally suited to Postecoglou’s style, and could potentially leave. Oliver Skipp meanwhile, needs to kick on if he is going to be a mainstay in the years to come.

Former Spurs defender Jonathan Woodgate suggested that Hackney is an ‘outstanding‘ talent. And clearly, his list of admirers tells its own story.

So it may be a coup if Tottenham do end up winning the race for his signature next summer.
