Report: Richard Hughes has already decided he wants to hand three Liverpool players new contracts

Liverpool are set to announce the addition of Richard Hughes as the club’s sporting director in the next few hours – and already, Hughes is said to be trying to tie up new deals for three Anfield stars.

Hughes, 44, joins Liverpool from Bournemouth and reunites with Michael Edwards – with whom he worked alongside at Portsmouth, and dealt with one another during Hughes’ decade at Bournemouth.

Liverpool are getting their new-look team sorted as early as possible ahead of what is going to be a busy summer, with the Reds likely to be busy in the transfer market – and looking for a new manager.

The Mail say that Hughes will be forefronting that search, with Xabi Alonso the favourite to take over at Anfield – but Sporting Lisbon’s impressive boss Ruben Amorim also under consideration for the role.

The Mail also reports that Hughes will look to sort out the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah. The trio all find themselves out of contract at Anfield in the summer of 2025.

Alexander-Arnold is obviously a no-brainer. Arguably the club’s best player, and still only 25. Many are hopeful Alexander-Arnold – who Patrick Bamford raved about last week – will stay for his whole career.

It is slightly different regarding the future of van Dijk and Salah. Dutch defender van Dijk is back to his best. Alan Shearer says Liverpool cannot afford to be without the former Celtic and Southampton man.

Salah has had interest from Saudi Arabia this season, and has been the more-likely of the three to leave. It will be interesting to see how successful Hughes is, in getting the three stars to sign on at Liverpool.

It will be interesting what the Liverpool players will be thinking, with Klopp set to go – whether they want to stay. But you would imagine that all three players would be willing to enter new talks at Liverpool.
