Report: Mike Gordon has personally called up 44-year-old to offer him Liverpool role

Liverpool have a huge summer ahead of them with numerous key figures set to leave Anfield at the end of the season.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp announced last week that he would be departing Liverpool at the end of the campaign.

As well as Klopp, his coaches and Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke are also set to leave Anfield in the summer.

According to reports, the Reds owners have tried to turn to a former employee to oversee their rebuild, but they’ve been rebuffed.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein has claimed that Liverpool got in touch with Michael Edwards over potentially coming back to Anfield.

Indeed, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) president Mike Gordon reportedly contacted Edwards at the weekend.

This was to float the idea of the 44-year-old occupying a senior role with Liverpool or within FSG, which would allow him to oversee the restructure.

However, Edwards apparently made it clear that he was not interested in a return to Anfield.

Liverpool must look elsewhere to oversee rebuild as Jurgen Klopp set to leave

Edwards spent 11 years at Liverpool, working as head of analytics before progressing to become Liverpool’s first-ever sporting director in 2016.

He oversaw some of the most important signings in the Reds’ history, including Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

Edwards left his post in 2022 and was succeeded by his assistant, Julian Ward.

A year later, however, Ward decided to leave, paving the way for Schmadtke to take on the Reds’ recruitment responsibilities on a short-term basis.

Edwards has since formed data consultancy Ludonautics, with Liverpool’s former director of research Ian Graham.

It looks as though Edwards to Liverpool is a non-starter, and with the end of a chapter on the horizon, FSG need to really think about how best to go about the rebuild.
