Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their reported pursuit of Ismael Bennacer, with Tuttomercatoweb reporting that he is now close to signing a new contract at AC Milan after a meeting today.
Bennacer now appears to be on the verge of committing his future to the Rossoneri. Tuttomercatoweb reports that his agent met with the Milan hierarchy on Wednesday.

But it does appear that he will sign that new contract with the Serie A champions.

Tuttomercatoweb reported at the end of last month that Liverpool were monitoring his talks with Milan. Jurgen Klopp is apparently a big admirer of the 25-year-old.
The Reds absolutely need to strengthen in the middle of the park in the coming windows. A few of their players are now into their thirties. Meanwhile, Naby Keita has never managed to live up to expectations. And the loan signing of Arthur Melo is yet to pay off for the club.
Bennacer would have been an extremely smart signing for the Reds. The £52 million-rated midfielder is one of the most prolific tacklers in the Italian top-flight this season. Meanwhile, few players have had more touches in the middle of the park, according to FBRef.
He is a player Thierry Henry is an admirer of. And plenty of Liverpool fans would have been delighted if he ended up making the move to Merseyside.
Unfortunately for those supporters, it appears that he is ready to stay put.
