Xabi Alonso wants to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool
Well, the Spaniard appears to be Liverpool’s No.1 choice to replace the German this summer.
An earlier story from Foot Mercato claimed that Liverpool had already made an approach to Alonso after the 56-year-old announced he would be departing at the end of the season.
Now – according to a new story by Foot Mercato – the man from Tolosa is actually keen to replace Klopp at Anfield, and Liverpool are ready to make an offer.
It is said that Alonso also has interest from Bayern Munich amid doubts over the future of Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena, although Liverpool are the Bayer Leverkusen manager’s preferred destination.
That comes as no surprise to us, after it was revealed that the 42-year-old actually played a part in convincing Thiago to join Liverpool from Bayern Munich in 2020.
Alonso has remarkably overseen 17 wins and four draws from 21 outings in the Bundesliga this season, putting Bayer Leverkusen five points clear at the summit.
In total, the 42-year-old has won 84 games out of 166 during his managerial career.
Liverpool admire other coaches such as Ruben Amorim
If a move for Alonso collapses this summer, some alternatives have already been linked with Liverpool.
Gianluigi Longari of TV Dello Sport claimed that Liverpool have identified Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP as a backup option to the Spaniard – after the Portuguese coach stood out to those in the boardroom at Anfield.
Roberto De Zerbi has also been linked – although Liverpool would need to pay the Italian’s £9m release clause to take him from Brighton.
