Liverpool are signing Arthur Melo from Juventus but their quest for a new midfielder nearly led them to incoming Chelsea newboy, Denis Zakaria.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is set to get his wish and get a deal for Melo done before the deadline. The Brazilian will bolster the Liverpool ranks after a wretched run of injuries in the opening weeks of the season has threatened to derail their title challenge.

However, according to Gianluca Di Marzio, things might have been different, with Liverpool said to have asked about Zakaria, who is now off to Chelsea it seems.

The Reds will have had Zakaria on their list of targets for some time. In fact, it was only back in January that the Reds were credited with wanting to sign the ‘incredible‘ midfielder while he was at ‘Gladbach.

Since then, Zakaria has signed for Juventus but is already on his way out, with Chelsea set to complete a deal for the Swiss midfield star.

Both Zakaria and new Liverpool man Melo will hope to make big impressions on their new clubs in the coming weeks if they’re given the opportunity. Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Zakaria will bring steel and fight to the Chelsea midfield while Liverpool’s capture of Melo brings them a more technical player.
