Liverpool are now interested in signing Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge, according to French outlet Jeunes Footeux

Jurgen Klopp’s men seem set to bolster their midfield options during the upcoming transfer window.

Liverpool’s problems in the middle of the park have been evident this season and Klopp has often been trying out different combinations due to injuries.

Of course, the Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham. Journalist Christian Falk even claims that Liverpool are in ‘strong position’ to sign the England star.

But a report coming out of France today has suggested Liverpool are also interested in a slightly more surprising player in Berge.

Liverpool want to sign Sander Berge

Jeunes Footeux claims Berge is eager to leave the Blades after joining for a club record fee of £22 million back in 2020 (BBC).

The Norwegian made the switch from Belgian side Genk and was highly-rated but Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League just 18-months later.

The French outlet notes Liverpool and Chelsea both hold an interest in the 24-year-old and have been monitoring his situation in South Yorkshire for ‘several months’.

Both of the Premier League giants could now go on the ‘offensive’ in January and attempt to land the midfielder.

Liverpool are apparently preparing themselves for both Naby Keita and Arthur Melo to leave the club.

Berge’s contract with the Blades runs until 2024 and he has been linked with a move back to England’s top flight consistently since he was relegated.

The former Genk man has been compared to Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira by one of his former coaches.

Kjetil Rekdal coached Berge during his time at Valerenga and he spoke with The Times just days after he completed his move to Sheffield United.

He said: “When I brought him back to Valerenga I compared Sander to Patrick Vieira. He’s tall, strong and fast for his stature. He is also not afraid to ask for the ball and will always do something with it.

“Sander has a good pass. He made an incredible progression in a short time. It’s a shame we have to let such a young talent go, but that’s just how it goes in football.”

Liverpool fans may be underwhelmed by the links to Berge, especially after being touted as a possible destination for the likes of Bellingham, Declan Rice and Enzo Fernandez.

But with Klopp looking to re-shape his midfield, Berge could be a decent squad option for the German.
