Liverpool have now shortlisted Julian Nagelsmann as a backup option to Xabi Alonso as the Reds hunt for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

That is according to the Telegraph.

So, what is the situation involving Liverpool and Julian Nagelsmann? Let’s take a look…

Liverpool shortlist Julian Nagelsmann as backup option to Xabi Alonso

Well – according to the Telegraph – Liverpool have identified the German as a potential managerial appointment if Xabi Alonso ends up deciding against a return to Anfield.

The Spaniard remains the No.1 option for Fenway Sports Group (FSG) after steering Bayer Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga.

However, plans are being put in place for alternatives, with Bayern Munich also keen to hire Alonso when Thomas Tuchel departs the Allianz Arena at the end of the season.

Nagelsmann – who has won 222 games in management – is currently in charge of the Germany national team, but would be available for hire after UEFA EURO 2024 this summer.

The Telegraph add that the 36-year-old performs well in data performance relative to squad and spending, a model which was used back in 2015 when FSG opted to hire Klopp.

Liverpool have another alternative

The Telegraph also mention that Ruben Amorim of Sporting CP is another backup option in case Alonso either stays at Bayer Leverkusen or joins Bayern Munich.

We recently covered a story from TEAMtalk which also claimed that Liverpool admire the Portuguese tactician – although there is a slight issue.

Amorim will cost the Reds a whopping £17.1m in compensation.

Contrastingly, Nagelsmann is believed to be available for free after UEFA EURO 2024 ends this summer, so from a financial viewpoint, the Germany boss is far more attractive than the 39-year-old from Lisbon.

Be sure to keep an eye on this developing situation, as Liverpool continue to prepare for life after Klopp.
