Report: Liverpool now scouting 'absurd' £88m defender Ten Hag is desperate to sign for Manchester United

Liverpool are looking at a number of defensive targets as they continue to look at who they can sign in the January transfer window.

The Reds have been linked with a host of defenders heading into the window. Goncalo Inacio remains one of the top names to be mentioned, while Fluminense captain Nino has also been watched.

Liverpool have seen Joel Matip go down injured. Further, Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are injured, meaning another centre-back, Joe Gomez, is basically covering in that position too.

And now, according to 90Min, another young Portuguese defender, Antonio Silva, is also on Liverpool’s radar.

Liverpool scouting Antonio Silva

According to the report, Liverpool are among the teams who are keen on signing the Benfica starlet.

Still just 20, Silva has been a regular for Benfica this season and has been lauded previously as an ‘absurd’ talent by former Manchester City coach Juanma Lillo.

“The young centre-back from Benfica, Antonio Silva, is not even playing. Do you know how good this kid is? Incredible. He’s absurd,” Lillo said of Silva.

Naturally, the path for Liverpool to sign such a player will not be easy. Reports have claimed Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is desperate to see Silva arrive at Old Trafford in the summer.

90Min reports how Silva has a whopping £88m release-clause in his contract. Their report also quotes Benfica coach Roger Schmidt as saying there’s no chance they’ll be looking to sell in January.

One to watch for Reds fans

It seems like Portugal are getting into a nice habit of producing top defenders. We’ve seen in the past the likes of Ricardo Carvalho flourish, while more recently Ruben Dias and Joao Cancelo have excelled in England.

Now, it looks like the duo of Inacio and Silva will be the next to come from Portugal to enjoy big careers as Premier League players.

At £88m, Silva is obviously an expensive buy. But we are at a point now in football where the top young players cost huge money.

Liverpool or United, then, might have to dig deep into the pockets to get this one done.
