Liverpool and Manchester City are both interested in signing Alan Varela from Porto.

Liverpool and Manchester City want to sign Alan Varela

Both Liverpool and Manchester City could do with a new man in the middle of their park.

The Reds don’t have a natural defensive midfielder apart from Wataru Endo. The Japan international, who is currently away on international duty, will turn 31 next month.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have Rodri, who is arguably the best player in his position in the world. He is integral to how Pep Guardiola wants his side to play.

Kalvin Phillips was brought in as his backup, but the England midfielder is now on his way to West Ham United on loan for the remainder of the season.

BolaVIP claim this week that Manchester City could try to sign Alan Varela as a replacement for Phillips. while Liverpool are said to be interested in the midfielder too.

Porto, however, have no interest in letting him leave for a penny below his release clause, which is set at a little under £60 million (€70m).

Liverpool wanted Varela last year

Alan Varela is not a new name for Liverpool fans who keep an eye on every transfer rumour out there.

The 22-year Argentine was linked with a move to sign for the Reds last year, when he was still at Boca Juniors. Planeta BJ revealed back in June that Liverpool had sent scouts to watch him in action.

BolaVIP, who credit Liverpool and Manchester City with an interest this week, have claimed that Jurgen Klopp and co at Anfield absolutely love Varela.

It has been claimed that Varela is being viewed as an option now because there’s a lack of depth in Liverpool’s midfield.
