According to Spanish outlet AS, Liverpool tried to sign Federico Valverde from Real Madrid in the final two days of the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were desperate for a new midfielder this summer. They were linked with a whole host of names, but they only managed to sign Arthur Melo in the end. However, he wasn’t the Reds boss’ preferred option.

Liverpool wanted to sign Federico Valverde from Real Madrid

The report from the Spanish outlet claims this morning that Liverpool tried to ‘steal’ Valverde from the hands of the Spanish and European champions when there was just two days left in the window.

Klopp’s side reportedly made a ‘brutal’ bid of £86 million to sign the 24-year-old Uruguayan, who scored an absolute stunner for the Galacticos against Mallorca over the weekend.

Predictably, Real Madrid said no. The report claims that the Spanish giants didn’t even consider it as they view Valverde as ‘non-transferable’.

The Uruguayan only signed a new contract a year ago and it includes a staggering £865 million (€1 billion) release clause (Eurosport).

Liverpool’s offer, as huge as it seems, was only a tenth of Valverde’s release clause.

Valverde would’ve been a sensational signing for any club in world football, and it’s no surprise that Liverpool reportedly tried to sign him late in the window.

The Uruguayan, who has been likened to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard by The Daily Mail, is one of Real Madrid’s most important players. He’s the future of their club, and there was absolutely no way they were going to let him leave this summer.

Liverpool have ended up with Arthur and the Brazilian is not a bad player. On his day, he’s absolutely incredible, but it will be interesting to see how he will fit into Klopp’s system.

Valverde would’ve fit in perfectly, but sadly, that’s a dream that will remain unfulfilled for Liverpool fans.
