Liverpool have now made contact over signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona during the January transfer window.
De Jong was of course the subject of a long-running transfer saga with Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United last summer.
He opted to stay at Barcelona but ESPN claim that the situation has changed which raises the prospect of a January exit.
De Jong has started just five Barca matches in all competitions this season despite them fighting tooth and nail to keep him away from Old Trafford.

On top of that, they look set to miss out on the Champions League knockout stages, which would mean another huge financial hit.
Barcelona’s financial issues are well-known but they did not sell de Jong to raise funds in the summer.
The report says de Jong has to raise the prospect of leaving himself, which he did not seem in any rush to do when United came knocking.
And Liverpool have made contact his representatives to look into the prospect of a transfer ahead of the winter window.
Barca boss Xavi has branded de Jong ‘extraordinary‘ but has seemingly preferred other options for much of the season thus far.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Dutchman was ‘disgusted’ with his situation at the Nou Camp after staying at the club.
The report says United are lurking again and so are Chelsea, who are also looking for a new midfielder amid fitness concerns over N’Golo Kante.
