Report: Liverpool could still sign ‘special’ defender Pep Guardiola said was good enough to play for Man City

Liverpool will need a new centre-back through the door this summer.

The Reds are already lacking depth at centre-half as it is, and with Joel Matip seemingly set to depart this summer, that area of the squad will be even thinner next season.

The Merseyside club have been linked with a number of different options heading into the summer, and despite differing reports, they’re still in the mix for one ‘special’ defender.

Liverpool still in Tosin Adarabioyo race

Reports emerged on Wednesday that Tosin Adarabioyo was set to sign for Newcastle.

However, now it looks as though those reports were premature.

The Magpies are said to be leading the race to sign Tosin, but, at the same time, the race is still very much open.

According to The Evening Standard, there are still a number of top sides courting Tosin heading into this summer, and Liverpool are amongst the chasing pack for the ‘special’ centre-half.

Tosin could be brilliant for Liverpool

This may not be the biggest name the Reds have been linked with, but make no mistake about it, Tosin could be brilliant for the Merseyside club.

The Fulham defender is very much cut from the same cloth as Ibrahima Konate, he has immense physical capabilities and is very brave on the ball, albeit, a tad erratic at times.

Tosin would be a brilliant depth or rotation option for the Merseyside club heading into next season, especially if Arne Slot wants to continue to play a front-footed defensive system that utilises a high line in the same way Jurgen Klopp does.

Schooled at Manchester City as a youngster, there’s a reason Pep Guardiola once said Tosin was good enough to have a big future at the Etihad.

Of course, getting this deal done won’t be easy. Newcastle are said to be at the front of the queue, while Tottenham and Manchester United are also said to be keen.

Regardless of where he ends up, Tosin is certainly a player to watch heading into this summer.
