Liverpool have been handed a significant blow due to Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

The Reds have already endured a difficult season, and losing their star defender has sent alarm bells ringing.

However, the January transfer window means Liverpool can look around for a replacement.

And according to Inter Live, the Reds could ‘immediately’ swoop for one of the best defenders in the game.

The player in question is Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Inter Live – via Sport Witness – claims the Serie A giants ‘may feel compelled’ to sit down with Liverpool to ‘listen to their offer’ for the defender.

Nerazzurri chief Giuseppe Marotta has already confirmed they have made the Slovakia international their best possible offer.

Without an extension, the January window will be the club’s last chance to cash in from his sale and avoid him leaving for free next summer.

The report claims Liverpool could look to sign him this month for €40million (around £34million) if they decide to move quickly for cover for Van Dijk.

Can Liverpool pull off another coup?

Liverpool aren’t in a great situation, but they still have four other centre-backs they can call upon (Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Phillips).

Meanwhile, Inter must now choose whether to lose their captain and one of the top defenders in the world mid-season, or for nothing in the summer.

Liverpool have done well over the past few windows in seemingly coming in from out of nowhere and sealing deals for highly sought-after player.

A year ago, it was Luis Diaz. In the summer, Darwin Nunez joined. And this year, Cody Gakpo arrived at Anfield.

Skriniar, ‘one of the best trackers‘ in the world and also ‘one of the best free agents who could ever become available‘, would be an equally big coup for Liverpool.
