Liverpool are on the hunt for a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs, who has reported whether Liverpool could sell Van Dijk at the end of the season.

So, what has been reported about Liverpool and Virgil van Dijk? Let’s take a look.

Liverpool looking for long-term Virgil van Dijk replacement

Well, according to journalist Ben Jacobs in GiveMeSport, Liverpool are looking for a long-term replacement for defender Virgil van Dijk.

The report has noted that Van Dijk will turn 33 in a few months, so Liverpool are sounding out replacements for the £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) Netherlands international central defender.

GiveMeSport has reported that Liverpool do not want to lose the defender at the end of the season.

Van Dijk, described as “unbelievable” and “the best defender in the Premier League” by former Tottenham Hotspur striker Darren Bent this month, suggested this past weekend that he could leave Liverpool at the end of the season along with manager Jurgen Klopp.

“Van Dijk turns 33 this summer, so naturally long-term replacements are already being sounded out,” states the report. “It’s the same with Chelsea and Thiago Silva, but that hasn’t stopped the Brazilian being a regular starter at 39.

“Liverpool don’t want to lose Van Dijk just yet so it will be down to any new manager to help convince him to stay.”

My View: Liverpool should not sell Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk is starting to get back to his best and is one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

I think that Liverpool have to keep hold of him for next season. Yes, Van Dijk is 32 now, but that does not mean that he is past his prime.

The Netherlands international centre-back is still very fit and could stay at the top of his game for a few more years.

Van Dijk is under contract at Liverpool until the summer of 2025. I  believe that it would be better for the Reds to let him go on a free when his contract ends than sell him at the end of the season.
