Despite their array of midfield talent at the club, Liverpool are now determined to add a top young player to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Liverpool spent big money in the summer, attracting some brilliant profiles to Anfield, but it seems the rebuild is not quite complete.
Photo by Chris Brunskill/Fantasista/Getty ImagesAccording to 90min, the club are now determined to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz in the near future.
Wirtz is said to have an £85m price tag, but is unlikely to be available in January according to this report.
Moreover, a transfer for the much-coveted 20-year-old may have to wait until 2025, but that hasn’t put Liverpool off.
Wirtz has been in inspired form for Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, a side that currently tops the Bundesliga.
And whilst Manchester City are also said to be very interested in the attacking midfielder, Liverpool may hope Alonso could have some influence.
It certainly would be an intriguing move given that Klopp’s Liverpool team don’t usually start with a player in the mould of Wirtz in their midfield.
Perhaps the manager does view the German as someone who can help evolve their midfield in the future.
Liverpool determined to add Florian Wirtz to Jurgen Klopp’s midfield
Although now strongly linked with Wirtz, some Liverpool fans might have preferred a slightly different profile for Klopp’s midfield.
Alexis Mac Allister is filling in well in a defensive role, but it would be a surprise if he was envisioned there in the long-term.

And whilst that’s not to say that Mac Alllister can’t, he has often come unstuck with his defending already this season.
Wataru Endo has had some nice moments, but perhaps wouldn’t be a starter in the biggest of games.
It does seem an obvious area to upgrade for Liverpool, perhaps one that should take priority over a signing like Wirtz.
Although, given that transfer may be for years to come, Klopp may have some defensive targets in mind.
That being said, Liverpool are now being increasingly linked with a £30m January move.
