Report: Club totally unaware that their 'brilliant' player will join Liverpool, but contact has been made

90 Min reports that Benfica are totally unaware of recent suggestions that Enzo Fernandez will join Liverpool, but contact has been made over a possible move.

Jurgen Klopp looks set to re-shape his midfield over the coming transfer windows after their issues in the position have been evident this season.

Liverpool have been linked with a host of midfielders ahead of next month’s transfer window and reports have suggested that they’re closing in on a deal for Fernandez.

Argentinian outlet La Capital claimed this week that the Reds have already reached a pre-agreement with the 21-year-old over a move to Anfield.

They claimed that Klopp’s men believe they have beaten the likes of Manchester City and Man United to his signature.

But in the latest update on the midfielder’s future, it seems that Benfica are completely unaware of any ‘agreement’ between Liverpool and their star.

Benfica unaware Fernandez will join Liverpool

90 Min reports that Fernandez will not be able to leave Benfica unless his £103 million release clause is paid in full.

The Portuguese giants are apparently oblivious to any agreement and the claims are premature.

The outlet notes that Liverpool are closely following Fernandez’s situation in Portugal and have spoked to his representatives. But Klopp’s men have simply just declared their interest at this moment in time.

Liverpool will face competition for the youngster’s signature too, with Real Madrid and Barcelona said to be admirers of his talents.

Fernandez has played a key role in Argentina’s run to the World Cup final in Qatar. The ‘brilliant’ midfielder has started in every game since scoring a wonderful goal against Mexico in the group stages.

90 Min also notes that Fernandez is fully focused on lifting the World Cup with La Albiceleste, while Benfica have no intention of selling their prize asset in January.

Of course, Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Jude Bellingham recently, while Anfield has been touted as a possible destination for World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat.

Liverpool will certainly need to address their midfield issues but they won’t be able to do so in just one transfer window.

Bellingham certainly seems to be their priority right now and it seems unlikely that Dortmund will allow him to leave during the middle of the season. The same goes for Benfica’s stance on Fernandez.

Amrabat certainly seems like the most realistic target for Liverpool next month, while they’ll undoubtedly have one eye on Bellingham and Fernadez for next summer.
