The question of who will replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool is set to rumble on from now until the summer.

The German’s announcement on Friday that he’d be leaving Liverpool at the season’s end has sent a shockwave through English and European football.

Of course, Klopp’s departure has sent the rumour mill into overdrive in recent days as speculation mounts over who will replace the Liverpool boss.

One of the names being mentioned as an early favourite is former Reds midfielder, Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard is flying with Bayer Leverkusen and is one of the names under consideration by FSG.

However, according to The Telegraph, Liverpool’s run at Alonso could be spoiled by Bayern Munich.

Liverpool face battle to land Xabi Alonso

The report from The Telegraph suggests that Klopp’s departure could be the start of a domino effect in management.

Further, Xavi leaving Barcelona also leaves one of the biggest clubs in the world looking for a new manager as well.

However, it’s Bayern Munich’s interest in Alonso that could really affect Liverpool’s plans. It’s claimed that the German giants will have Alonso on their list of replacements should Thomas Tuchel decide to move on.

Tuchel is also being linked with a move back to England, albeit Liverpool are not one of the clubs mentioned when it comes to the former Chelsea boss.

For Liverpool to get Alonso, then, it very much feels like they’ll have to get in there early.

Alonso has a very realistic chance of winning the Bundesliga title and upsetting the apple-cart in Germany at the same time.

If that is the case, then it would be no surprise at all to see Bayern make their move for him. Remember, Alonso also featured for Bayern later on his career, so the link is already there.
