Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on a 20-year-old defender who is also on the radar of Liverpool.

The Gunners are currently light at the back, with Jurrien Timber, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Thomas Partey all on the sidelines.

Likewise, Liverpool have found themselves with numerous injuries at the back. Joel Matip, Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas are all out at present.

With the opening of the January transfer window fast approaching, the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool will be able to bolster their ranks.

According to CBS Sports, the Gunners have set their sights on versatile Ajax talent Devyne Rensch, a player also linked with the Reds and Manchester United.

As per the article, the versatile 20-year-old defender has been largely used as a right-back this season, but is capable of playing across the entire defence.

Rensch came through the ranks at Ajax and has made 111 competitive appearances for the Dutch giants.

The youngster has seven goals and eight assists to his name for Ajax’s senior team, and has also won one Netherlands cap.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout wrote about Rensch in February 2021. He described the player as a versatile defender with ‘pace, tackling, technique, passing, versatility, positioning’ and ‘ambidexterity’ as his strengths.

Kulig also likened Rensch to Chelsea legend Cesar Azpilicueta and gave him a very solid potential rating of 9 out of 10.

With Arsenal and Liverpool both needing to bring in more defensive reinforcements, Rensch is certainly a good shout for both clubs.

At just 20 years old, he has his entire career ahead of him. At the same time, breaking into triple figures for Ajax appearances and already having a senior cap under his belt shows how much quality he has.

Versatility is also very important, and the fact Rensch could fill in across the whole back line will no doubt be of interest to Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp.

Rensch’s price tag is unknown, but Transfermarkt has posted a ballpark figure of €8million (£7million). And with the player’s contract expiring in 2025, Ajax’s hand won’t be particularly strong in negotiations.

With that in mind, Arsenal and Liverpool will fancy their chances of negotiating a modest deal for Rensch.
