‘Replace him’: Pundit tells Liverpool to sell Cody Gakpo and sign 27-year-old striker

Stan Collymore has said that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool should try to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford.

The former Liverpool striker believes that the Reds should include Cody Gakpo in a deal to bring Toney to Anfield.

So, what has Stan Collymore said about Ivan Toney? Let’s take a look.

Liverpool urged to sign Ivan Toney from Brentford

Well, Stan Collymore has said that Liverpool should try to sign Ivan Toney from Premier League rivals Brentford.

The former Liverpool striker believes that the England international striker would fit in alongside Mohamed Salah and Luiz Diaz in Jurgen Klopp’s attack.

The pundit thinks that Liverpool should offer Brentford cash and Cody Gakpo to get a deal done for 27-year-old Toney, who has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur.

Toney, also on the radar of Arsenal, has made 68 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The English striker has scored 32 goals and given nine assists in those games.

Gakpo, who can play as a forward or as a winger, has made 39 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career. The 24-year-old Netherlands international has scored 10 goals and given three assists in those games.

Collymore told CaughtOffSide: “For me, if Liverpool decided to come calling, that would be perfect. I know they already have an embarrassment of riches in forward areas but if any of them were offloaded in the coming months, the Brentford star could be a great addition. I rate Toney so highly that I could see him in between Salah and Diaz.

“Liverpool will likely look at him and say ‘Not for us’ but If I was the Reds, I would genuinely be inclined to let Gakpo go, who I don’t think will go on to become a prolific Liverpool striker, and replace him with Toney. If they offered Brentford cash and Gakpo, I wonder if the Bees would go for that?

“Toney would add something significant to Liverpool as he can play as a traditional nine, he can drop off and he has proven with Mbeumo that he can forge partnerships. For me, I would be giving Brentford a call.”

My View: Cody Gakpo won’t leave Liverpool for Brentford

I do not think that Cody Gakpo will want to leave Liverpool for Brentford.

Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world and have a massive fanbase. The Reds could win the Premier League title this season. Brentford could relegated to the Championship.

So, why would Gakpo even consider leaving a powerhouse like Liverpool for Brentford?
