251 Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Liverpool know absolutely everything about one manager’s contract situation and what it will take if they are going to appoint him as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement in the summer.
Jurgen Klopp brought the football world to a standstill in late January by announcing that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season. Unsurprisingly, one name seems to be the standout candidate for many when it comes to appointing his successor.
Xabi Alonso is no stranger to Anfield having spent five years on Merseyside during his playing days. He is also doing a remarkable job with Bayer Leverkusen, taking the club to the top of the Bundesliga table. Leverkusen’s 3-0 win over Bayern Munich on Saturday would have only strengthened many Reds fans’ desire to see him replace Klopp.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano suggested that some at Bayern like Alonso amid potential questions over Thomas Tuchel’s future. But he insisted that Liverpool are the side showing the most interest right now.
“It’s important to say that Xabi Alonso, former Bayern player, has always been appreciated by some people at the club and also with the Bundesliga, fantastic experience he’s having at Bayer Leverkusen. He could be a future candidate for the Bayern job. But let me say, that from what I’m hearing, since weeks, it’s not something happening this weekend, these days, it’s something that’s already happened weeks ago, Liverpool are well informed on the situation of Xabi Alonso,” he said.

“We have to see if they decide to go for another one because there is a shortlist. It’s not just Xabi Alonso. But for sure, he’s the main candidate for Liverpool. This is not new.”
Reds taking big gamble if they don’t appoint Spaniard
Certainly, unless Leverkusen experience a rapid decline, it is hard to see how Alonso does not become the next Liverpool boss.
Perhaps he may decide that he is not yet ready. But Liverpool are not a club to turn down. So if they make an approach, the 42-year-old will surely want to make the move.
And if they do not go for Alonso, the Liverpool hierarchy will know that they are piling additional pressure on whoever they appoint.
Klopp is one of the most popular managers Liverpool have had. So it would be smart to target who the large majority of the fans want.
Obviously, Liverpool’s search will be a lot more sophisticated than that. But if they look elsewhere instead of Alonso, they are going to have to be sure that they have got something special.
