'Really, really special': BBC pundit amazed by how much 27-year-old Liverpool player has now improved

Pat Nevin has named the Liverpool player who produced a special performance against Manchester City on Sunday, insisting that he has been amazed by his improvement.

Liverpool gave a brilliant account of themselves at Anfield. Jurgen Klopp’s men were exceptional for so much of the game, asking all sorts of questions of the champions.

On another day, Luis Diaz could have easily had a hat-trick. The Colombian will be disappointed with how wasteful he was in front of goal, particularly in the second-half.

Luis Diaz the standout in brilliant Liverpool display

But there is absolutely no question that Diaz was one of the best players on show in a battle of two giants of the last decade. His running caused Manchester City so many problems. And his trickery led to some great moments in the contest.

Diaz has gone through some hot and cold patches since joining the Reds. But speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Pat Nevin suggested that the 27-year-old has taken his game to another level – and was absolutely brilliant against Manchester City.

“A number of players were great today but I thought Luis Diaz was really, really special. He has improved in my eyes consistently,” he said.

“Looking at him today, he is a player I like. He is a fabulous player and I think part of that is Jurgen Klopp – he has made him a better player.”

Reds make statement in fascinating title race

If everything clicks for Liverpool’s attacking players, it is going to take a monumental effort from the likes of City and Arsenal to prevent Jurgen Klopp from lifting the title.

Mohamed Salah is back in contention. Darwin Nunez won Liverpool’s penalty. And Diaz is receiving plenty of plaudits for his latest display.

Liverpool can take so much belief from the way they took the game to City. They rode their luck at times. But you have to, to get anything from Pep Guardiola’s men.

The Reds were the better side. And with Manchester City set to play Arsenal in the near future, it is soon going to be Liverpool’s turn to watch their rivals take points off each other.
