‘Really, really impressed’: What Pep Guardiola said about German manager who could replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

9 months ago 122

Jurgen Klopp has decided that he will step down as the Liverpool manager at the end of the season.

On Friday, Liverpool announced that Klopp will be leaving his role as the first-team manager when the current season ends. It came as a shock.

A number of names are being linked. Many pundits seem to think that former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso would be the perfect successor to Klopp at Anfield.

Julian Nagelsmann linked with Liverpool

One of the in-work managers who are being mentioned in regard to the Liverpool job is Julian Nagelsmann.

Journalist Dean Jones has reported in SportsLens that Nagelsmann, who was linked with Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea in 2023, has “also been talked about as a potential successor to Klopp”.

The reporter noted that “there has been more concern about that over recent times and he is currently the manager of the German national side, albeit on a contract that expires in the summer”.

Nagelsmann is in charge of Germany at the moment. The 36-year-old’s current contract runs until the end of the Euro 2024 finals.

So, this means that Liverpool would not have to pay a compensation fee to hire Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann did not have the best of times at Bayern Munich. Even though the German manager won the Bundesliga title in 2021-22, he could not do much of note with the Bavarian giants in the UEFA Champions League.

However, that should not detract from what he has already achieved in the game. The 36-year-old is one of the young managers who was incredible at Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig.

Nagelsmann led Hoffenheim from the brink of relegation from the Bundesliga to UEFA Champions League qualification.

Under the young manager, RB Leipzig reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

What Pep Guardiola has said about Julian Nagelsmann

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is a big fan of Nagelsmann. The former Barcelona boss came up against the German when he was in charge of Bayern Munich and raved about him.

In October 2018, Guardiola told Bundesliga.com about Nagelsmann ahead of City against Hoffenheim in the UEFA Champions League: “I’m really, really impressed [with Nagelsmann]. Taking over Hoffenheim in such a bad situation so young.

“He will have a lot of success in his career. He’s already at a good team in a top competition. It’s the first time we meet, but hopefully it won’t be the last.”

Maybe, just maybe, we will see Nagelsmann in the Liverpool dugout next season.
