Mark Schwarzer believes that some of the Liverpool players will actually feel a little let down by Jurgen Klopp following the news which stunned the football world last week.
Liverpool fans may not have expected their club to make the biggest headlines of the January transfer window. But Jurgen Klopp brought the game to a standstill last week, announcing that he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season.
To say the news was a surprise to most of us would be an understatement. Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table, are battling on four fronts this season, and have started to successfully rebuild their squad.
Liverpool players will be hurt by Jurgen Klopp decision
So Klopp deciding that he will not be sticking around was a shock. And perhaps some within the Liverpool squad will feel a little cheated by the announcement.

“There’s very few players who haven’t been successful under Jurgen Klopp. So I think the relationship with him is so close and so deep. But I think we saw it with Virgil van Dijk when he gave his response to hearing the news about Klopp leaving. All of the players were completely in the dark about it of course, and are quite shocked about the news. And I think a lot of players have signed for Liverpool and stayed at Liverpool because of Klopp,” he said.
“So it’s an interesting one. I think if things don’t quite go to plan in terms of results, maybe performances, sometimes you see players drop off, sometimes you see people’s heads drop. I’d like to think they won’t. I’d like to think the way Klopp has managed, the way he has his relationship with the players, I think they’ll just keep going.
“And I know as a player, I’d be really bitterly disappointed if I was so much behind the manager and my decision to stay at a club was based on a manager, I’d be really disappointed. And I’d feel a little bit let down in some degree, because you’ve made your long-term decision based on him being the manager. So I think it would be really tough to take at times.”
Reds squad will have known that German could not go on forever
Football players will understand that managers come and go. And you would imagine that the departure of Jordan Henderson in the summer somewhat prepared the Liverpool squad. Few would have imagined that the skipper would decide to depart, particularly for Saudi Arabia.
They will also be aware of just how much Klopp gives to the Reds. And given how long he has spent on Merseyside, they would have known that he would not be carrying on forever.
Klopp has given everyone associated with Liverpool plenty of warning. So if anyone is particularly disappointed in him, they now have more than enough time to find their way out also.
