Martín Zubimendi has previously rejected the approach of Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Liverpool are pushing hard to make Spain and Real Sociedad star defensive midfielder Martín Zubimendi their first signing of the summer in what would be a major statement of intent for the club as they transition from Jürgen Klopp to new manager Arne Slot.
The 25-year-old Basque is considered one of the top players at his position, a midfield controller who excels under pressure in the mold of Sergio Busquets. He has a reported €60M release clause and has previously rejected approaches from Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich.
Liverpool, then, were always going to have to work hard to convince him to move, even if there is a feeling that now—unlike in past summers when other top clubs have moved for him—may be the right time for him to take the next step in his career.
On Wednesday, the tone and tenor of reporting on the transfer suggested they had managed to do just that. Now, though, there are reports that Sociedad are making a last ditch effort to convince Zubimendi to once again rebuff transfer interest and recommit to his boyhood club.
Liverpool are still, it must be pointed out, considered favourites to complete the signing of the midfielder, but Reds fans who have seen big name, big money transfers collapse in recent years may understandably be a little nervous if the deal now starts dragging on.
