The January transfer window is open, and there’s half a chance that Liverpool will be active.

The Reds have been linked with a number of potential signings, but with the squad quite packed and sitting top of the league, many are wondering whether or not a new signing is actually necessary.

Speaking on The Redmen TV, Neil Jones has been analysing the Reds’ potential transfer activity, and he’s given Liverpool a 40% chance of signing a player this month.

Liverpool have 40% chance of making a signing

Jones shared the likelihood of Liverpool signing anyone.

“Yeah, I’m probably 60/40 that they won’t do anything granted that the situation stays as it is and you don’t get any season-ending or long-term injuries. Left-back, I don’t think you can sign a specialist senior left-back, you have one that doesn’t get on the bench then. Tsimikas has a contract, Robertson is first-choice and Gomez has been brilliant as well,” Jones said.

Potentially a defender

There’s a 40% chance that Liverpool make a signing this month, and if there is a new player to come in, we have to imagine they will be a defender.

Indeed, if there’s any position where the Reds are lacking it’s at centre-back.

Joel Matip’s injury has thrown the cat among the pidgeons in that area, and with Joe Gomez having such long-term injury problems, it may not be long before the Merseyside club are scrambling in that area.

Of course, whether or not Jorg Schmadtke and Jurgen Klopp can find the right player to fill this gap in the heart of the defence remains to be seen, but if Liverpool are actually to do any business this month we wouldn’t be surprised if it was indeed a new centre-back coming in.

Liverpool are definitely a team to keep an eye on as the January window rumbles on.
