David Seaman has admitted that Alisson Becker probably had his worst game of the season on Sunday for Liverpool, but did defend the goalkeeper over the third goal he conceded against Arsenal.
Many would have been stunned by how lacklustre Liverpool were at the Emirates. The Reds went into the game top of the Premier League table. And they would have known that they would have gone some way to knocking Arsenal out of the title race with a win.
But Liverpool barely managed to get out of second gear after the opening minutes in each half. And the afternoon was rounded off with two horrible moments involving both Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk.
David Seaman defends Alisson after Liverpool lose at Arsenal
Gabriel Martinelli put Arsenal 2-1 up after a mix-up between Alisson and van Dijk. And it was van Dijk’s deflection which sent Leandro Trossard’s effort through Alisson’s legs and into the back of the net as the full-time whistle loomed.

“Yeah possibly. To be fair to him though, the third goal, they are a nightmare for goalkeepers, because they make you look so bad. Because that little deflection off van Dijk off Trossard’s shot, absolutely kills you,” he said.
“You can’t react in time. And the fact that it went through his legs makes it look even worse. I’ve been there. It’s a tiny little touch, but the ball’s going to Alisson’s left. So he’s already started his movement to go to his left. And then it gets that little knick, straight through his legs to put that on top of the mistake that he had with van Dijk.”
Reds goalkeeper will demand more of himself
Alisson will not be pleased with his role in the two goals. However, they are not absolute howlers.
Yes, he probably should have cleared the ball for the second. But the first mistake is from van Dijk who fails to deal with the ball initially. And the nudge from Gabriel Martinelli does not help the Liverpool pair.
And if David Seaman believes that he could have done little about the third goal, then it is hard for us who could barely keep a clean sheet in five-a-side to think differently.
Nevertheless, Alisson will undoubtedly still be beating himself up after the defeat.
