Sky Sports’ Alan Smith was left seriously impressed with Cody Gakpo’s assist for Liverpool’s third goal against Bournemouth today.

Liverpool picked up all three points with an emphatic 4-0 win at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Jurgen Klopp’s side struggled in the opening period after a bright start from Bournemouth. But they clicked into gear in the second half, with Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota both getting amongst the goals.

But it was Jota’s first of the evening which earned high praise from Alan Smith on Sky Sports, who lauded Cody Gakpo after the £35 million set up the Portuguese forward.

Smith lauds ‘intelligent’ Gakpo after assist vs Bournemouth

Speaking on Sky Sports, Smith singled out Gakpo for praise after his through ball put Jota on his way for his first goal of the game.

“Made one, scored on. Diogo Jota, not a bad afternoon’s work,” the commentator said. “When he gets into these positions, it’s not often he disappoints.

“Cody Gakpo – it’s a bit like Jota’s pass to Nunez. Nicely weighted, perfect to attack first time. Intelligent player, Gakpo.”

Gakpo has struggled to nail down a place in Klopp’s side this term after such a bright start to life at Anfield.

The 24-year-old has played in a range of positions at Liverpool and he came off the bench to replace Luis Diaz today.

While he can play in a central midfield role, you’d have to argue that Gakpo’s best position is indeed off the left-hand side.

He faces stiff competition for a place in the side due to the brilliance of Diaz, while Nunez has also been in excellent form of late.

But Gakpo certainly provided some extra quality in the final third today and his assist should hand him a much-needed confidence boost.

The Dutchman has had a hand in three goals in his last three games in the league and will surely be knocking on the door for a place in Klopp’s XI soon.
