'Perfect': Glenn Hoddle thinks Liverpool finally have their next Steven Gerrard

Liverpool returned to the top of the table with a win over Sheffield United on Thursday, even if Jurgen Klopp’s side were some way away from being at their complete best against Chris Wilder’s side.

Going into the game, Sheffield United were expected to be beaten by Klopp’s in-form Reds. The question being, how many goals the difference – rather than, if Liverpool would pick up three points, or not.

James McAtee missed a glorious chance in the first few minutes for the Blades. They had chances before Darwin Nunez’s opener – a horror show from Ivo Grbic. Even then, Liverpool were not home and away.

Conor Bradley’s own goal turned Anfield into a nervy setting, fans worried that a game they should be winning – would leave them unstuck. Alexis Mac Allister changed that with a flash of his right boot.

The ball dropped on the edge of the area and the in-form World Cup winner slammed home a shot into the top corner. An incredible goal, before Cody Gakpo make it 3-1 late on. Chris Wilder praised him.

Speaking in his analysis on Premier League Productions, Glenn Hoddle said Mac Allister is the first player that reminds him of midfield icon Steven Gerrard, since the Anfield legend left Liverpool back in 2015.

“He’s the closest to Steven Gerrard I’ve seen in a red shirt since Stevie left Liverpool,” Hoddle said about Mac Allister, following Thursday night’s 3-1 win. Yeah it is [a big compliment], but he’s that type of player.

“He can win the ball back, he’s got vision, he’s not as athletic as Steven but that strike – you can see Stevie hitting that. That strike is fantastic balance, his balance is perfect,” Hoddle continued on the Argentine.

What Jurgen Klopp said about Mac Allister on Thursday night

What a goal it is. Another example of Mac Allister dragging this Liverpool side towards the title in the race for the Premier League trophy. Liverpool now sit two points ahead of Arsenal, three ahead of Man City.

Speaking after the match, Klopp described Mac Allister as “absolutely insane” and he’s right. His form of late has been just that. His assist against old side Brighton on the weekend won the game for Liverpool.

If Liverpool are going to win the title, it is of paramount importance that they keep Mac Allister fit in the race to secure honours. He is the key to ending Klopp’s time at Liverpool, as a perfect swansong.
