Jay Bothroyd has named the member of the Liverpool side who does not get anywhere near enough credit, insisting that he should be in the England squad.
Liverpool remain on course to send Jurgen Klopp off in style this summer. The Reds made a real statement with their 4-1 win over Brentford at the weekend. But the victory did come at a cost for the Premier League leaders.
Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez all came off before the second-half at the Gtech Community Stadium. Obviously, much of the focus has been on how much of a blow it is for Liverpool to potentially lose Jota or Nunez. But it is also a setback for Jones to be sidelined.
Liverpool star Curtis Jones criminally underrated
Speaking on The Optus Sport Football Podcast, Jay Bothroyd insisted that Jones is a lot more important for the Reds than many actually realise.

“People sleep on Curtis Jones, he’s important to the way they play. He doesn’t get enough credit. He should be in the England squad, that’s how good he is.”
Bright future ahead for Reds’ midfield
Jones does appear to have stepped his game up to another level this season. Previously, there appeared to be a sense that he was not quite going to be at that standard to be a regular starter for Liverpool.
Unfortunately, he has had some injury issues. But his performances on the pitch have been excellent this season. Jones definitely appears to be getting better and better.
It has been a year of transition for the Liverpool midfield. A number of their key players moved on at the end of last season. And many appeared to be from the middle of the park.
The likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo all arrived. And they have largely impressed over the course of the campaign. But Jones has definitely done his bit.
And judging by Bothroyd’s comments, there is a lot more to come from the academy graduate.
