'People I speak to': Sky Sports pundit suggests 44-year-old could take the Liverpool job instead of Xabi Alonso

Jurgen Klopp ensured he’d finish his time at Liverpool with at least one trophy by winning the League Cup yesterday against Chelsea.

The German boss saw his team of youngsters overcome the odds to see off the Blues thanks to a fine late header from Virgil van Dijk.

Of course, while the season continues for the Reds on the field, work is underway behind the scenes to ensure a new manager is ready to go for when Klopp leaves. Xabi Alonso has been heavily linked, but Bayern Munich also want him.

And speaking on Sky Sports this morning, former Liverpool left-back Stephen Warnock admitted he believes Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi is a great shout.

Roberto De Zerbi backed for Liverpool job

Speaking about De Zerbi on Sky, Warnock admitted he feels the Italian ticks a lot of boxes for the Reds.

“I still think De Zerbi is on the radar as well. A lot of people I speak to say yeah but De Zerbi’s not as good defensively or the league position etc. But you’ve also not got the ability at Brighton to go out and pay big money for a Van Dijk or Alisson, that next level of player up. That’s not being disrespectful but Liverpool are competing for the league title and Champions Leagues. They have bigger money and bigger appeal. I think if De Zerbi came in, his style of play would suit Liverpool and everyone says ‘well what about the character?’, you aren’t going to get another Jurgen Klopp. You’re going to have to find a different personality who is big enough to make big decisions, work with the staff behind the scenes and bring in players from around the world who are going to be next in line and I think De Zerbi fits that from what Brighton do,” Warnock said.

Big shoes to fill

Warnock is spot on here in that whoever comes into Liverpool cannot try to be Jurgen Klopp. It just will not work if that’s what they try and do.

De Zerbi is definitely an interesting shout though. The Brighton boss has turned things around at The AMEX from when Graham Potter left and it does look like he has something special about him.

At just 44, De Zerbi is relatively inexperienced in terms of age but has done well wherever he has been thus far.

Liverpool, then, could do a lot worse than land the Italian as they look to move on from the Klopp era.
