Pat Nevin has lauded one ‘outstanding’ Liverpool player after their draw with Manchester City on Sunday, claiming that he produced one of his best performances for the Reds.
Jurgen Klopp’s men gave a brilliant account of themselves in the crucial clash between two of the Premier League title contenders. Liverpool created more than enough chances to win the game. But they also rode their luck at times. Phil Foden hit the bar – though he would have known little about it – and Jeremy Doku was denied by the post.
Remarkably however, it proved to be an incredibly quiet afternoon for Erling Haaland. The Norwegian had a couple of early sights of goal. However, he seemed to become more anonymous as the game went on.
Virgil van Dijk had one of his best Liverpool games today

And speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Pat Nevin suggested that the Dutchman stepped up in a big way once again when his team needed him.
“Virgil van Dijk is outstanding. He is absolutely having one of his great games. He has covered brilliantly, he has tackled when he has had to, he has read the play brilliantly,” he said.
“He hasn’t given Haaland a sniff.”
Another captain’s performance
There is definitely something very special about this team this season. Liverpool look to have that extra determination to try and send their manager out in the best possible way.
And perhaps no player looks more focused than van Dijk right now. He has seen so many of his teammates sustain injuries. And yet, he has been so consistent and so reliable.
And when the big occasions come about, van Dijk becomes a different animal.
