Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is one of the very best players in the Premier League, but there is perhaps one underrated aspect of his game.
Indeed, while Van Dijk is often praised for his physical dominance, defensive acumen and incredible reading of the game, he’s also one of the very best passers in the league.
Van Dijk very rarely makes a mistake on the ball, and it’s not as though he isn’t brave with his passing either, often playing sweeping passes to unlock opposition defences with balls over the top.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Owen Hargreaves has been discussing Van Dijk, and he labelled the £75m Liverpool man as one of the best passers in the Premier League right now.

The pundit spoke highly of the defender.
“The Mac Allister ball was a very difficult ball, and this one from Van Dijk is the same. Most players would probably just lay that into Konate, but Van Dijk is one of the best at these passes, and this pass completely changes the game because it allows you to get up,” Hargreaves said.
“Solanke, he didn’t want Van Dijk to get the ball because he knows he’s one of the best passers, and they let Konate have it because he’s lesser of the two evils.”
Incredible
Van Dijk’s passing really shouldn’t be underestimated.
The Dutchman can easily find a player from 70 yards away, and while his first job is to defend, the fact that he can also act as a quasi-playmaker is a huge plus as well.
Van Dijk’s passing is an important part of Liverpool’s build-up to an attack, and while he’s not exactly a Trent Alexander-Arnold type playmaker, he does often make things happen by spotting these early passes from the backline.
Van Dijk is an incredible player and an incredible passer.
