'One man I will say': 41-year-old Serie A coach tipped for Liverpool job if they can't land Xabi Alonso

Harry Redknapp has tipped Steven Gerrard to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool but that shout has been played down.

The former Tottenham manager picked Gerrard as his surprise contender to replace Klopp if the Reds cannot get Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen.

At the moment, Gerrard is over in Saudi Arabia and there remains competition from Bayern Munich when it comes to landing Alonso.

Of course, Gerrard’s name is synonymous with Liverpool and he’ll always get a mention. However, pundit Nigel Reo-Coker has said that Gerrard shouldn’t be considered, and instead named Bologna boss Thiago Motta as the man to replace Klopp.

Thiago Motta to Liverpool

Speaking on the Friday Football Social show on BBC Five Live, Reo-Coker threw Motta’s name into the mix.

“No. I think there’s other managers out there who are achieving great things and playing great styles of football that you’d be better off going for. When you look at Liverpool right now, you can call them Klopp’s kids but you need a manager who can work with them. There’s one man I’m going to say right now, Thiago Motta, the Bologna manager he’s doing really well. He’ll be a good manager to look at. I just don’t think Steven Gerrard would be a good fit to replace Klopp, I think there’s too many other managers out there,” Reo-Coker said.

Motta has Bologna up in fourth in the Serie A table at the moment and in with a serious chance of making the Champions League. Still only 41, Motta has been in charge since 2022 and is building a fine reputation.

Motta a new name in the equation

The likes of Alonso and Ruben Amorim are names who have already been mentioned but Motta is a brand new one.

It’s interesting that Reo-Coker brings Motta’s name up in the conversation. We’ve seen Roberto De Zerbi come from a smaller club in Italy and smash it in England and Motta might well be the next one to do that.

Motta has clearly made an impression at Bologna and if he can get them into fourth, it will be a huge achievement. Quite whether he can have enough in the locker to take the Liverpool job, remains open to debate.
