'On the list': Xabi Alonso's side now want to sign £28m Liverpool target - journalist

Hoffenheim star Maximilian Beier has emerged as a new target for Liverpool ahead of the summer window but they could face competition from a manager they are trying to target – in Xabi Alonso.

Beier, 21, has been on fire for Hoffenheim this season. Called up by Julian Nagelsmann to the Germany squad this month, Beier has had a hand in 17 goals in 27 league games this term. 12 goals, five assists.

It has been reported that Liverpool, Brighton, Brentford and Nottingham Forest have all looked at Beier. The latter of which have probably dropped out of the race for Beier, given their recent points deduction.

However, now it is said that Beier could remain in Germany and Liverpool could face competition from Alonso’s Leverkusen as well as champions Bayern Munich. Alonso of course, is linked with Anfield.

Florian Plettenberg told Sky Germany: “There are also a few clubs from the Bundesliga. Dortmund is not hot at the moment, but Bayern are informed, Leverkusen has him on the list, but he won’t be cheap.”

The report which carries Plettenberg’s quotes also report that he has a release clause in his contract at Hoffenheim, worth a bargain £28m. Cheap, given his stats in the Bundesliga this season, and his age.

A move to Leverkusen would see him push for a starting spot on one of the wings. At Liverpool, he may have to be patient for his chance and that could largely depend on the future of Mo Salah at Anfield.

It is unclear if Leverkusen are after Beier regardless of Alonso’s future – or, if it is Alonso that is driving a move for Beier. If the latter, then perhaps it could be Alonso that suggests Liverpool to do a deal for him.
