The centre half has been recalled by the Reds due to a lack of playing time for the mid-table Scottish side.
Rhys Williams will always have a fond place in the memories of Liverpool fans for his role in 2020-21’s push to secure a top four finish, with the young centre half called upon alongside Nat Phillips as an emergency pairing in the midst of an injury-struck season.
The promise he showed in a crisis had many thinking he might just be set up for a solid career, perhaps for a bottom-half Premier League side, but subsequent loan spells have been disappointing and now he has been recalled from Scotland’s Aberdeen FC.
Williams headed north to Scotland last summer on a season-long loan but has made just one appearance, in the Challenge Cup against Stirling Albion. He was regularly on the bench in the Europa League but has yet to make a matchday squad in the league.
A pre-season injury may have hindered his ability to integrate with his new squad, but despite having yet to make a matchday squad in the league, Williams was only unavailable for selection on one occasion—the very first game of the season—due to injury.
It seems unlikely that his recall now has to do with anything but that lack of playing time, and so the expectation and hope will be that the now 22-year-old centre half will head back out and find better luck at another club in the second half of the 2023-24 season.
