After three years in charge of Aleti’s youth team, Torres is now manager of the reserve team and is seen as a potential successor to Diego Simeone.

For Liverpool fans, we’re solidly into the doldrums of June. Jürgen Klopp has been given his sendoff and the 2023-24 season is well in the rearview. Arne Slot is the new head coach but there’s been no pomp or ceremony surrounding his arrival.

There’s no loose lips and so no meaningful transfer chatter coming out of the club with Michael Edwards back pulling strings. And the it’s-not-club-football-but-it’ll-do-in-a-pinch that is the 2024 edition of the Euros doesn’t kick off for a few days yet.

In Spain, though, there is exciting news for a former Liverpool star, with Atletico Madrid announcing formally this week that Fernando Torres has taken the expected next step at his boyhood club and taken on management duties for Atleti B.

Ex-Red star striker Torres has led Alteti’s youth team for the past three years, and while he wasn’t a name most expected to enter the coaching ranks following his retirement, he’s since established himself as favourite to eventually replace Diego Simeone.

As part of that, taking charge of the B Team in the third tier of Spanish football is seen as the next step in his development, and if he does as well there as with the youth side—where he regularly bested local rivals Real Madrid—the only way is up.
